Tracking visitors to a sub-domain separately

Hi,

I have a client who are installing 'big green buttons' on trade counters which when pressed will launch their webpage. They want to be able to filter this traffic out as opposed to just sending everyone to the homepage.

Is it best to create a sub-domain of their site with a re-direct to the homepage (which the user will never be aware of) and track visits to that sub-domain? Or just a simple unique URL which we can put a re-direct on?

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Joe,

Where would users get the unique URL from? If from email or another website, you can use UTM parameters in order to track the custom campaign. Please check the URL builder below:

Hi Joe,

I think there is no need to set up a subdomain for the page with the button. You will be able to see the traffic in the reports for that page in GA.
If you can share more details and if you have more questions I'll be glad to help.

Hi Arnold,

Thanks for getting back to me. To clarify, the client ultimately wants to send whoever presses the button to the homepage but they need to be able to filter out this traffic, i.e track how many users reached the homepage from this source and then subsequently track their onward journey through the site. So the original idea was to send them to a unique url but put a re-direct in place to the homepage?
