Top level page views high compared to subpages

We still generate web usage reports by using a web server log analyzer. Overall usage is pretty close between GA and server log reports for sub pages, HOWEVER, for the top level (default.asp) page, the number of page views is 1000+% higher than what the server log provides.

Why the discrepancy for only this one page?

Hi Tim,

Referral spam is specific to GA, it uses the measurement protocol to send the fake hits directly to GA without visiting the site.
I meant the bounce rate on default.asp, not overall.

Hi Tim,

Can you check if these page views are 100% bounce rate, 0 second visits? If so it is referral spam.

Spammers are sending data to your GA account using the measurement protocol. Here are two articles about referral spam:

Hope this helps.

Overall bounce rate is for the month is 45%. Looking at provided resources now.

So the referral spam is specific to GA and would record the hit in the web server log? (still reading articles)

Thanks for helping a newbie, although have used GA since it was released, have not kept up with it and used it to its full potential.
