Sudden drop in traffic - need help

I work for a small non-profit.


I pulled our stats between Jan. 1 and Sept. 8: 87% of all traffic was coming from the US with 19 sessions from Russia. Monthly average sessions were 937 sessions. (Yeah, low traffic, but it is a membership site.)


Pulling the stats since Sept. 9 tip Dec. 2 – traffic has come to a standstill and 53% of those 213 visits were from Russia and only 17 attributed to traffic from the US. Monthly average sessions are now 71.


The increase in Russian traffic and the dip in other traffic has me concerned and left with nothing but hunches, conjectures and theories best arrived at wearing foil hats.


Is there any way to shut off traffic from outside the US? Blocking those IP addresses? I’m struggling with knowing the next best steps, so if you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them.


Is it possible my site traffic is being diverted to a phishing site and if so, how can it be stopped?


Any advice would be appreciated.

You are dealing with referrer spam.
The easiest way to deal with this is to:
- Go to the Google Analytics Admin section
- Select the correct view
- Go to Filters
- Click Add filter
- Give your filter a name such as "Include only my website"
- Under Predefined, select "Include Only"
- Under Select Source or Destination, select "traffic to the hostname"
- Under Select expression, select "that contains"
- In the Hostname field, enter "", where is really your domain name.

Save your filter and enjoy new, somewhat-spam-free traffic!
