My Organic Traffic is showing a 50% drop over last year, has google penalized me for some reason?

No clue re whether Google has penalized you for some reason.

1) Is it a drop in just Google organic traffic , or across a number of different search engines,?
2) Are you sure the lose you are seeing in the organic traffic was legitimate organic traffic and not spoofed/spam traffic masquerading
as organic traffic? This had been quite an issue for nearly all uses for an extended period of time and has since been dealt with in most instances
to the best of my knowledge (why you may be seeing a drop if the spam traffic is no longer being shown in the reports)
Very good indepth article here that is worth taking the time to read regarding the different types of spam data etc and how to spot it and deal with it so you can look back over the older reports. You may have to do a bit more sleuthing in regards to the GA reports.
