Site search tracking when using predictive search results

Like many websites my site search now offers results in a drop down list whilst the user is typing their search term. If the user clicks on an offered result and never gets to the point of pressing enter after entering a search term the query is never logged as a search within Google Analytics.

Is there anyway to track the entry of search terms if a search url is never generated?

Hi Becky,

If the clicks on these predictive results do not pass a query parameter in the URI, then you need to pass a query parameter using a virtual pageview.  That will require a developer or GTM to do this dynamically.

More on Virtual pageviews here:

https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/pages#modifying_page_urls

And a method by Simo Ahava to do it in GTM:

Best,
