Report clean-up for URLs

Hi guys,

I have a very tough question about URL clean-up:

Currently, I am seeing the following in the GA reports:

Domain
www.domain.com/page.html                                      3  users

www.domain.com/page.html?var=value                    1  user

www.domain.com/page.html?var2=value2                 2 user

www.domain.com/page.html?var3=value3                 6 users

I believe it unsafe to assume that by removing the parameters the actual page:

www.domain.com/page.html has a total of 12 users (3 + 1 + 2 + 6). Am I right?

I want to create an explorer-type report to both show the actual users on the actual page and actual users per page with parameters. Is it possible?

Regards,

Charles

Hi Charles,

How about filtering your page report so that only the pages you're interested in are visible and then to check the sum data in the report-table heading to get the sum values? Note however, that users generally see more than one page – so the sum of user numbers of the pages won't match the number of users of all pages.

Whenever I use the filter feature of the view, it filters everything. I want to be able to view the report on a page-basis and page+variable level. Is it possible?

Page + Variable Basis:

Domain
www.domain.com/page.html 3 users
www.domain.com/page.html?var=value 1 user
www.domain.com/page.html?var2=value2 2 user
www.domain.com/page.html?var3=value3 6 users

Page Basis:
www.domain.com/page.html 9 users

Hi Charles,

you can set up any filter with regular expressions here. Assuming default case that your domain name isn't contained in your page URLs, examples for RegExs are

  • ^/page\.html                             if you mean any version including pages with URL parameters
  • ^/page\.html$                           if you mean /page.html page only
  • ^/page\.html\?var2=value2$    if you mean /page.html?var2=value2 only
  • ^/page\.html\?                          if you mean pages with URL parameters only
