Referral Traffic - How Accurate?

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

 Hello,

We recently came to the end of a service contract with a 3rd party who through email campaigns claimed they were sending a significant number of visitors to our site, my issue been that the reports from analytics were somewhat significantly different to the reports they were sending to us.

When I raised this issue they came back with the comment that Google analytics data isn't actually that accurate, and isn't a reliable way of tracking visitors? Odd how I have identified 2 leads that visited the site from them to us, but no more.

Is is true that Analytics data is actually that inaccurate?

regards

Alex

Hi,

Google Analytics doesn't track referrals from email links by default, you need to use tagged URLs in the emails in order to track custom campaigns. Please read about custom campaigns here: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1033863

You can find the cusom campaign URL builder tool here: https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/campaign-url-builder/

Hope this helps.

Hi Arnold,

Thanks for your response, allow me to clarify

The 3rd party emails, first takes users to their website before that site relay visitors to ours, this is where the issue is as what they are advising in terms of number of visitors from there to ours, and what analytics is reporting to have received from theirs to ours are different and by a significant amount.

regards

Alex

Hi,

It can happen that the referral information is lost and the traffic from that site shows up as direct traffic.

If the other site is https and your site is http then you will not receive referral data. Please read about it in the article below.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.
