Pageview totals seem inflated

Pageview totals for my blog seem suddenly to have spiked and the numbers are not reflected in any of the other data. The number of pageviews listed for individual posts is about where it's always been but total pageviews have skyrocketed. Something's not right. Anyone have an idea what it could be?

Richard look at your site content located at Behavior-->Site Content-->All Pages for the time period that you see the spike in and see which pages are generating the most pageviews. Then look at those pages to see if one there is anything wrong with the code on them, two were these pages recently updated or modified, three what was the Avg. Time on Page, four what is the bounce rate for these pages.

If your time on page shows 00:00:00 and bounce rate is 100%  then add a secondary dimension of Host Name to the report and make sure that the host is your site. If not your host name then you could be seeing spam. Their are several posts and threads on this site dealing with spam how to detect it, how to filter it, how to prevent it.

Hi Richard,

If that's the issue Brian mentioned then you should read those articles in order to fix it:

1. http://help.analyticsedge.com/spam-filter/definitive-guide-to-removing-google-analytics-spam

2. http://www.lovesdata.com/blog/2015/removing-referral-spam

I really recommend you check out the spam filter insertion tool as well that is made by Simo Ahava. This tool lets you automatically create and link spam filters to your Google Analytics views. It's good for the future. You can find it here: http://www.simoahava.com/spamfilter/

Here you can read more about this tool: http://www.simoahava.com/analytics/spam-filter-insertion-tool/

Hope this helps.
