Hi Guys,

I was creating a custom report in google analytics to find out the contribution of each traffic source in generating pageviews on my site. Following are the major traffic driving channels for me: Direct, Email, Google Organic & Google CPC.
On my homepage I use 4 banners in a carousel & each has source defined as "homepage-banner" in the utm. My question is if somebody comes to my site "directly" & clicks on any of those homepage banners, will the pageviews generated by that user be counted under Direct traffic or "homepage-banner". Is it a possibility that the pageviews get counted under both "Direct" traffic as well as "homepage-banner".

Thanks a lot. Prompt reply would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Aniruddh

Hi Aniruddh,

don't use UTM tagging for internal campaigns - it's designed for external campaigns only. It will overwrite the direct source.

Actual best practices depend on if you're using e-commerce are not and if you're using Google Analytics or GTM coding. See [1] for an overview.
