Major discrepancy in landing page pageviews when age applied as secondary dimension

When looking at a specific landing page GA reports that I have had over 1000 users arrive on the page. When I apply age as a secondary dimension (over the same date range of course) it reports less than 1/3 of that number for all age ranges. I understand that GA withholds some information when I apply demographic dimensions for privacy reasons, but why is the discrepancy that massive?

I wonder if it has to do with the dimensions you're using. Age is a user-level dimension and landing page is a page-level dimension (I think). Sometimes mixing dimensions on different levels can produce inaccurate results.
