Landing Page vs. Landing Screen

Can someone explain Landing Page vs. Landing Screen? I can't seem to find a clear explanation anywhere. Just going by the definitions listed for them within GA, I would expect web sites not to have Landing Screen data, or that it would be the same as Landing Page. I don't know anything about GA for apps, so I'm probably way off.

I'm asking because I recently noticed Landing Screen and see that the data is different from Landing Page (for my web site, not an app).

Any help would be appreciated!

Definetely, because any kind of screen isn't defined in webpage data.

Hi Amy,

There is indeed a 'Landing Screen' dimension in Analytics web properties - but I think that's a bug because it has no relation to any mobile screens. It simply displays hostname plus page URL.

The data for both is different though, which is what confuses me. Would you suggest using Landing Page and not using Landing Screen?

Hi @webfield ,

I have always wondered if this was a mistake (Google does not usually make mistakes... at least they would not leave it in there if it was) . There is absolutely no documentation on Landing Screen and I would love to know why it is there... it has been bugging me for days.

Hello :-)
I dont have any experience with setting this up. Given that app/screen tracking can be setup within analytics.js
Then Landing Screens (A screen through which visitors enter an app.) in a property setup for web tracking doesn't seem

completely out of place. Can send both app and web data to same property
https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/screens
(
I may also be completely off track too)

Hi Bronwyn,

thanks for pointing this out - I haven't been aware of that [1].

By the way - wouldn't that solve, then, the issue of true cross-device tracking in Google Analytics if you managed to gather both web and at data in a common user-ID view?

Hi Christoph :-))

From my understanding it should do.. however keep in mind as your link points out, not all reporting options are available to the different View types.
