Is it possible that events can impact on referral traffic reporting?

Hello guys,

This is the situation. We work for a audience engagement platform and they provide recommended or related news for publishers via iframe to be embed on page. Links from related news section are pointed to an external url that redirects user back to desired post on publisher website. When this happens, Analytics starts a new session and the platform name became the referral for that session.

We have a pretty consistent number of sessions across publishers and we can track the amount of clicks from our server based on the amount of hits redirection url got.

On January we decided to start firing events on related news links to be able to better track our traffic and user behaviour on publishers websites via GA.

The thing is, after doing this, referral traffic from the audience engagement platform dropped consistently, around 35% drop.

Is it possible that firing an event on a external link click is changing GA behavior to the point of tracking less referral sessions from our client's platform?
