How to get full referrals path originating from google group posts ?

It seems that referrals traffic from Google Groups posts : groups.google.com only being shown only as  /forum/ in Google Analytics.

For example:

Source: groups.google.com

Referral Path: /forum/

Is there a way to drill down to full URL referral path ? What I'm hoping to achieve is to see below information:

Source: groups.google.com

Referral Path: /forum/#!topic/<group name>/<post topic ID>

This would be useful to identify which particular group and post that refers to a landing page.

Or would this require some tagging on the URL posted on Google Groups ?

Thank you.

Hey Wan,

I believe that what you see is generally what you get when it comes to referral path since none of the secondary dimensions seem to offer you what you're looking for. You may want to instead try to use UTM tracking when possible for more accurate information.

Hi Wan,

Try 'full referrer' instead of 'referral path' as secondary dimension in your referral-traffic report.

Hi Webfield and Joshua,
Thanks for the replies from both of you.

I've tried the 'full referrer' dimension and it returns similar result.

Source: groups.google.com
Full Referrer: groups.google.com/forum/

As I can see more informative referral paths from other similar forums website, perhaps this is related to being from a Google domain?

For example, a URL in a forum post Google Groups such as: (Chosen randomly for example purposes, a post which contain a link)

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-analytics-super-proxy/lLiKNjtWUq4
or
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-analytics-super-proxy/-yH1AlZa8nE

When you click a link in either posts above, it will redirect as

https://www.google.com/url?q=<escaped URL>&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=<some ID>

Thus erasing the detailed path information ?

Thanks.

It's probably because Google's Forums use HTTPS and thus hide part of the information. @webfield what are your thoughts?

Yes, it really depends on two things: (1) how Google Groups sets the referrer when passing to a HTTP or HTTPS website and (2) how Google Analytics treats the referral URL, if non-zero, especially regarding the hashmark (#) and what follows.

If it's a link to your own website try to investigate it with Google Tag Assistant Recordings [1] where you can actually see what data is being transferred into your Google Analytics account and which is not.
