How to check whether email is opened or not

I am trying to implement a report in Google Analytics to check whether the user has read a particular email or not. I am sending a hidden image in the email with the src as shown below.
<img width="1" height="1" alt="" id="_x0000_i1025" src=";tid=XXXXXX&amp;cid=XXXXXamp;t=event&amp;ec=email&amp..." width="1" height="1" />

I have added a custom metric to check whether the email is opened or not. cm1=1. I am getting the email opened count in the report, But as soon as I send the email it is incrementing the number by 1 even before I open the email. I need to increment it only if the user has opened the email and downloaded the image. Could you please help me on implementing this.

To my understanding getting the data is related to users email settings (when images are downloaded or if they are downloaded at all) for example for me the image download is disabled by default.

So at best the numbers you get are not very accurate I guess.

Check from your mail client that if it downloads the images by default. Can you change that and did it affect the outcome?

To make bad day worse, spend it wishing for the impossible
