Hostname appended to request URI (/page/path/www.example.com)

Hi there,

In the Behaviour > Site Content > All Pages report this is most obvious as each of the pages in the list are arranged by <page path><hostname> as described in the title.

See an example of how it appears in the reports here.

There was a filter add hostname to the start of the URL but I have removed this as it was working correctly and the URLs looked like www.example.com/path/of/url/www.example.com.

I used the Google Tag Assistant to record some hits and found an interesting 'Mutation' that is recorded on every pageview. I took a screenshot of it which can be seen here.

So I guess my question is, how can this mutation be occurring when there is no filter that appears to be appending the hostname to the request URI?

Could I fix this in GTM by setting the 'page' field on my GA pageview tag to {{Page Path}} or would that cause more issues?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

2 things:
1. Either you are explicitly sending the altered page path with gtm (by default this should not happen) or
2. Your view settings have the default page field set to 'www.example.com' which should be removed

Hope it helps!

Hi Zorin,

You were right, the default page field was set to the hostname. Thank you very much!

Hi,

I have the same issue but this time round it is appended at the front.
Example:
www.example.com
In fact, i'm only seeing this traffic to some of my old pages with /http:// recorded in the recent month.

I've checked that the default page setting is empty. Hostname to these urls (with http://) is (not set) but it looks like it is coming from legitimate sources (eg. m.facebook). I thought it might be spammed traffic but bounce rates looked decent (not hitting 100%).

Do you have any insights why this is happening?

Thanks Smiley Happy
