High page views and low unique views - sign of error?

In my analytics, I have a huge spike in page views on a four year old blog that we have not promoted and has not come in as a referral. The page views are over 8000 but the unique views are only 41. The bounce rate is 0 and the source is direct. I understand that page views and unique views are different, but this huge discrepancy has me suspicious. I'm wondering if these results could be based on a runaway process or spam of some kind.

Thank you,

Mary

Hi Mary,

Look at the ISP and hostname reports to see if it may have come from a different source than what is known to you. This might indicate bot or spam traffic. Also look at metrics such as high % new sessions and low pages per session.

Thank you. That was very helpful. We looked at the domain names and they are all know robot hosts.

Assuming that they are spammers, how do I remove this data from my analytics?
