Help with referral links that cannot be found on source site

Hi there,

We have a few accounts actually where the referral list is showing a link from another site of ours, just shows '/' in path, however nowhere on the source site can I find the link to the site in the report. Has anyone else had something like this occur?

Secondly, we develop sites on staging sub domains, and then when ready to go live I update the URLs via search/replace. So, during dev the site will live at domain.subdomainstage.com and then when live will be domain.com. We are seeing referrals once the site is live from the subdomain "dev" links show up, though I cannot find those hard coded anywhere, and the subdomain 301's to the new domain once live. Any thoughts here?

Thank you, I am at an utter loss.

Hi Ryan,
Unfortunately, what you're experiencing in the first instance above is completely normal. Fortunately, a community member here wrote a great article that I reference frequently, to work around this.

Regarding your second issue, this is likely your traffic that you're seeing. The GA cookie lasts for 30 days so when you see the subcontinent referring you, it will go away after 30 days. To work around this, you can add the sublimation to the referral exclusion list in your property settings.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the reply, I will read that link shortly.
Could you explain what you mean on the second thing please? "To work around this, you can add the sublimation to the referral exclusion list in your property settings" ?

Thank you!

Hi Ryan,

Dave means to include subdomainstage.com in your referral-exclusion list in your Analytics admin in Property > Tracking Info.

Try to debug your setup with Google Tag Assistant Recordings [1] using the Google Analytics Report. There you'll see all data both that is tracked and that is used in your Analytics View.
