Googleapis.com as a referral

I am seeing a large number of sessions with googleapis.com as a referral. What could it be? I don't know that we are doing anything with google apis that might be causing this. Could it be in anyway related to AMP traffic?

Could be, that's my current hypothesis, but that origin is not explicitly mentioned in the article you link. I do have plenty of domain.cdn.ampproject.org traffic too.

Mmm, or something adsense or dfp related, similar to tpc.googlesyndication.com we used to get a couple of years ago (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/webmasters/l_g0N48E-S0)?

I think that comes from Android home page or tasks page on mobiles - top stories.

Check the first screen. I guess at least 90% of this traffic is from mobile?

Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the suggestion. It's almost 100% mobile, but only about 80% Android. But that makes sense since you also get that kind of recommendations on the Google App for ios.

It is definitely from the news in the mobile Chrome both on iOS and Android.

You can find this by putting a second dimension in Analytics, which is path.

Referral Path in Google AnalyticsReferral Path in Google Analytics

Than if you search for it, you will end up here at line 37. See bellow:

So it is not AMP or anything else, it is the so called Chrome Suggest
