Direct Traffic from Mobile Device Category (Audience Overview)

Does anyone know how Google Analytics track traffic referred from mobile apps?  Let's say I am using Facebook app or Flipboard app and click on a link to go to my website.  Would Google Analytics for my click from the Facebook app as direct mobile traffic or from m.facebook.com?  I am guessing it will show as direct but just want to confirm.

Thank you

Unfortunately, its not black-and-white. For example, a click on the call-to-action button on Facebook in the app will be direct/none, but a click on the "visit website" link in the app will be credited as Facebook. A click from the Yelp app is credited to Yelp. A click from Flipboard appears to be always direct/none.

In many cases (but not by any means all), if the app is using the built-in browser you get a referrer. If it opens the external browser app, its always direct/none
