Cannot obtain data for subdomain

Hi guys, I'm trying to obtain past, historical data for one of my subdomains.

As you guys might know, subdomain data causes a problem because, for example, http://subdomain1.test.com/ shows up as "/" in GA. However, http://test.com/ also shows up as "/" in GA.

To separate data out, I understand the best way is via Filters. However Filters only apply to all data going forward and do not work on historical data.

The only other way I know of how to extract subdomain data is via Custom Reports.

However, for some reason, I just cannot isolate the subdomain data via Custom Reports.

I'm doing my Custom Report as such:

Type: Explorer

Metrics: Bounce Rate, Average Session Duration

Dimensions: City, Landing Page, Exit Page

Filters: INCLUDE Landing Page, Exact, http://subdomain1.test.com/

I get a grand total of zero data with this.

Exactly zero.

However once I remove the Filter, all the data appears.

I've also tried changing the filter as such:

Filters: INCLUDE Hostname, Exact, http://subdomain1.test.com/

Doesn't work either. Anyone have any idea?

Anyone know anything?

Hi :-)
The first example wont work re Include Landing Page Exact as the default reporting only gives the Request URI - no hostname/domain info

The 2nd example.. change the filter and try instead
Filters: INCLUDE Hostname, Exact, subdomain1.test.com
I say to try this instead as the subdomain info is not reported in GA with any http:// it is reported just as subdomain1.test.com
and you are using exact match..which wont match to the http://

Hey mate,

Thanks for the help.
I tried your advice as to the 2nd example.
Include, Hostname, Exact, subdomain.test.co.uk.

Unfortunately it is still not working.
I've attached a screenshot but not sure if it'll be of much use.

Something strange is that if I use the exact same parameters, but change it to:

Include, Hostname, Exact, test.co.uk, I get the full 100% results.

For some reason GA just won't register the subdomain.

GA snip.PNG

Could it be that because the main website is https://www.test.co.uk/, but the subdomain is https://subdomain.test.co.uk?

Did you have tracking code using the same tracking id on the subdomain in the past for the date ranges you are looking at?

If there was no tracking code on the subdomain in the past then there would be no data to report.

Also if the View has been using a filter to only include data for the parent domain, again there will be no data to report

If you go to the GA Standard Reports and look at the Audience > Technology > Network and make sure Hostname
is the Primary Dimension,
If you change the Date Range at the upper right to the past date range you want to see data for, In the Hostname column in the table, is subdomain.test.co.uk showing up as one of the Hostnames with a row of data for it?

Hi Bronwyn V,

Thank you for trying to help me out!
Ok to answer everything slowly:

Did you have tracking code using the same tracking id on the subdomain in the past for the date ranges you are looking at? If there was no tracking code on the subdomain in the past then there would be no data to report.

I don't have access to admin rights or the code. I only have viewer rights.

However, from http://www.gachecker.com/, the website confirms that the subdomain has Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics (GTM). It however does not have the regular Google Analytics without GTM, it appears this subdomain and it's parent website only has Google Analytics via GTM.

Also if the View has been using a filter to only include data for the parent domain, again there will be no data to report

The View has filters to exclude Test Accounts, exclude Demo Accounts, and Include Only hostname www.test.co.uk.

Is that the problem? If the View has a filter to "Include, Only, Hostname, www.test.co.uk", where www.test.co.uk is the main website, data from the subdomain won't be included?

If you go to the GA Standard Reports and look at the Audience > Technology > Network and make sure Hostname
is the Primary Dimension,
If you change the Date Range at the upper right to the past date range you want to see data for, In the Hostname column in the table, is subdomain.test.co.uk showing up as one of the Hostnames with a row of data for it?

Lastly, yes, I did as you say, subdomain.test.co.uk does not show up at all. However, other subdomains.test.co.uk show up, just not the one subdomain I am looking for.

Hello :-)

Did you have tracking code using the same tracking id on the subdomain in the past for the date ranges you are looking at? If there was no tracking code on the subdomain in the past then there would be no data to report.

I don't have access to admin rights or the code. I only have viewer rights.

However, from http://www.gachecker.com/, the website confirms that the subdomain has Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics (GTM). It however does not have the regular Google Analytics without GTM, it appears this subdomain and it's parent website only has Google Analytics via GTM.

Regardless of how the tracking is installed (eg via regular GA tracking code snippet or a tag via GTM) if there was no tracking for the same Property installed on the subdomain for the past period that you need the data for, then there will have been nothing to track

If there is a filter to only include data that belongs to the hostname www.test.co.uk, then it will contain only data for www.test.co.uk.
So yes, that is why data for the subdomain is not also being reported.
Usually its best practice to leave the initial default View without any filters so as there is always a raw, unedited copy of data should it be needed for reporting or to compare against.

Sorry to say but it looks like there is no historical data for the subdomain.test.co.uk for you to report on.
