Analytics flagging pages as unreachable bug?

We got a report saying that an increasing number of our pages were becoming unreachable through 403 and 404 errors.  We reported this to our server hosts, and they looked into it.  Here is what they had to say...

"I checked the list and it looks like a majority of these are message board forum posts. It looks like Google is attempting to reach the wrong URLs for the mobile version of your message boards. The problem, I think, is that instead of going the URL route of http://m.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/xxxxxxxxx.htm for forum topics, it is attempting to look at the desktop version of the address, without the 'm'.

It looks like they are also trying to look for mobile versions using the wrong address. Note the /m/ subdirectory they have added, rather than placing it at the beginning of the URL. In some cases it looks like they are using '/mobile/' as well. I am not sure why they are doing this, but in any case, as long as they are not returning 404 errors for the correct pages, there should not be any actual problems with displaying your pages in Google search.

We hope this has helped you with your issue. If you have other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us again. If you have a follow-up question or inquiry to this case, you can click on the 'Not Quite Yet' button below to respond."

If they are correct it means that there is an error in the Google analytics coding.  So basically, I have two separate questions- 1. are they correct/is there an error, and 2. could this impact our page rankings?

(Also, if this is a bug, how do I report it as such?)

Hi :-)

We got a report saying that an increasing number of our pages were becoming unreachable through 403 and 404 errors.
Where are the 403 and 404 errors being reported in the analytics interface? It sounds more like a Search Console Crawl Error than an analytics error.

Are you seeing incorrect page urls being reported in analytics in the Behaviour > Site Content > All pages report?

One thing i did notice on the main site http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com the tracking code should be placed before the closing </head> tag. atm it is somewhere further down in the body of the page which can lead to inconsistent tracking of pageviews.

Some of the forum pages such as the following have no tracking code installed in them at all, which means analytics is unable to track it
http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5495036.htm

Having said that.. the same url typed in as http://m.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5495036.htm

redirects without any issues to http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5495036.htm

Do you have a mobile version of the site or forum?
If so, what is one of the mobile urls?

Thanks :-)

Thanks.  I've handed it off to the site owner.  I'm just a volunteer admin so I was having to run back and forth, asking the boss to look up the analytics, then talking to support, then Googling...

He's going to try to move the tracking code like you suggested.
