I tried to remove what I think could be malware based on what I read online but to no avail. How serious is this and what do you suggest I do about it? Thank you!

This is called referral spam or ghost spam and is harmless -- do not follow any of the links. It is stuffed into Google Analytics and the originator never actually visited your site.

You can usually prevent most of it with a valid hostname filter. There are various articles describing this, including my own:
