Campaign Tracking over recording
We are using Google URL builder to create trackable URL's using _UTM parameters to record clicks on Graphic banner ads. The problem is that Google Analytics is still recording sessions long after the ads are removed.
We are creating News articles in our cms, and then adding 'non cms links' into the form field. We are also having to shorten the links first using our own internal shortener because the Links are too long. The shortener does not reuse links.
Google support suggest that the URL's are still being followed somehow even when the pages are removed. I doubt 1000's of people are bookmarking our banners.
Re: Campaign Tracking over recording
Why do I see sessions coming from an old (paused or deleted) URL Builder campaign?
This is similar to the previous scenario where return users cause more sessions than clicks to appear for a given campaign. When an URL Builder campaign is paused, users who originally accessed the site via this campaign and later return via direct will have these repeat direct sessions reported as coming from the URL Builder campaign.
In some cases this can lead to scenarios where you see sessions showing for a campaign six or more months after the campaign has been paused or deleted.
Tip: As above, you can segment these sessions by new and returning users to confirm this is returning-user behavior.
Also: If a URL containing the tracking parameter is picked up by a bot or spider (such as Google-bot) it can sometimes be indexed, which can cause a URL containing the campaign parameters to appear in Google Search Results Pages (SERPs). A quick way to find out if this is happening is to enter your website URL into the Google Search box and include the Graphic Banner's utm parameters
