Why has my segmented data suddenly disappeared?

Firstly, this is our current set up
We have 2 simple segments set up for our users.
Customers = log in at some time during the session.
Prospects = Don't log in during the session.

We set a variable within a span at the page level based on the user's status.

Fig1: shows the variable set to Prospect

From tag manager, we use that variable to update a Custom Dimension in analytics.
We then use the custom dimension to create the Segment. We have been using this successfully for about 2 years.

The Issue
Last month I noticed all the historical data on the prospects segment had dropped, showing no users.

I created a new segment to try to bring back the data, with no luck.

A couple of days later the original prospects segment was showing data again, but only from the day that I noticed the issue. All past data show 100% sessions from the customers.

Nothing has been altered our end, and I believe that segments should show historical data as long as the conditions can be met, so what's happened to our data?

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Richie,

How are your segments created for prospects?  User or session?  If user you have a 93 day window only.

GA does not re-process data so whatever you pushed in for the last 2 years will still be there.

I didn't know that by about the user segments, thanks.

In this instance, they are created using session.

Ok, so the data should still be there, will take a deeper look into the when I lost the data and see if I can trace it to something I did.
