View only new users

I'm trying to view only new visitors with a segment and have set the users sessions to '= 1' in the aim that it will display only users with 1 session/visit to the website.

 

I'd assume that a user with 1 session has only visited the site once. But as you can see from the image below, it displays 28% of these users as returning visitors. Is there a way to show only new visitors through segments?

You may do better to create a custom report with a filter for pages with that parameter

and then apply the new user segment.

If you create a segment for pages, because segments are session based, they will usually still display all other pages that were also visited in those sessions that fulfilled the segment page condition.

or alternatively, copy the New User segment and use it to create a new one

You can apply a New User segment located in the System segments

Hi Bronwyn, thanks for the quick reply.

 

In this instance I'm also trying to filter by users who have visited pages with '?view=v2' in the url so I've had to create a new custom segment:
