Subdomain not showing up as referrals on root domain GA

Hi Guys,

First I'd like to thank you for the help.

I have the following issue:

We have GA set up the following way for our subdomain and root domain:

https://www.evernote.com/l/AdKEcicnZUNB56h-SckVSxPITzqnMxsEwPI

I would like to see the subdomain's traffic (only referrals, in other words, the ones which reached the root domain) on the root domains GA property.

My initial theory was that it is being blocked by a filter, however, the RAW property, which doesn't have any filter whatsoever, doesn't report the subdomain under referral traffic or anything alike.

Thanks

Best

Hi @Samuel S

it wont show that as referral data, because with Universal analytics, the domain automatically gets put on the Referral Exclusion List, which also automatically includes any subdomains as referrals too.

The following article has a solution to this that requires some javascript.
This would be setup on the main domain (the subdomain uses a different property and has it's own seperate referral exclusion list for the subdomain property)

@Bronwyn V I appreciate the quick reply. After a couple hours of searching I also stumbled over the following articles: http://www.annielytics.com/blog/analytics/cross-domain-tracking-referral-exclusion-list-how-choose/#...

It depends what you are trying to track.

Often there are legit reasons for setting up a subdomain with its own property, different to the parent domain.

If you wish to continue using different properties, then a subdomain tracking code setup is not going to work for you.

If you need to use different properties on the subdomain and main domain, and wish to then see the subdomain as the referrer in the main domain reporting, then you will need to use something as per the article on lunametrics that i linked to.
