Higher Amount Of Pageviews Shown With Secondary Dimension Applied

Hey guys,

 

I've come across something strange when I've been collecting page views on GA. I've been following the normal process (behavior > site content > all pages) which produces a pageview number as per usual. However, when I apply a secondary dimension (e.g. acquisition > source) it produces a substantially higher pageview total. Off the back of this:

 

- Can anyone explain why this is happening?

- Is the pageview total after a secondary dimension has been applied valid, or should I use the pageview total shown without a secondary dimension?

 

Any help on this would be great – just a bit confused!

Hi Sean

 

Sounds like you are getting sampled data.  Anytime you have more than 500k sessions and ask for data that has not been pre-aggregated (secondary dimensions, segments, custom reports) you can get sampled data.
