tracking code two top-level domains same site
Hi Analytics Community,
Our website have two top-level domains that displays the same site – an easy-to-remember-domain-name, and a more correct but complicated domain name. We don't want to set up a redirect form one of the domain to the other – so both domains share the same Analytics tracking code. The analytics account is registered on the complicated domain name, and does not show statistics for visits that uses the easy domain name.
I find a lot of info on cross-domain tracking (different sites and different domains) and sub-domain tracking, but no info multiple domains on same site.
Is it impossible to do this or just difficult? Anyone that knows some work-arounds?
Re: tracking code two top-level domains same site
That's not a common scenario. Normally, for SEO reasons you always use a 301 redirect that the domain showing the same content as another domain.
If you want to stick with your current solution for some reason, in principle you may use the same analytics ID for both sites provided there are no users that switch domains during a session. Otherwise, you have to use cross-domain tracking.
Have you checked the audience > technology > network > hostname report to see if there are users tracked on the easy domain?
