We are looking change our site from http to https, is there anything we need to in google analytics? we are using Universal analytics btw.

My main fear is losing historical data because everything I read suggest it's a url change.

Hi Josh :-)
Historical data wont be lost unless you delete any of the Views, the Property or the Analytics Account.

You could create a new Property and swap out the tracking code on the site and start tracking from scratch in the new Property when you change to https

For the sake on continuity though and being able to compare traffic before and after the change, I would be more inclined to create an annotation in Google Analytics to state what date the change occurs and then change the website url in the Property Settings and any Views to reflect https instead of http
