Tracking setup in ISV product

Hi,

We would like to implement Customer Experience Improvement Program in our management studio shipped with product. It is served as html5 application which user can interact with using web browser. As we can't determinate single web url address I can not enter it during GA configuration (in site url field). My questions are:

- What kind of GA should I choose web page or mobile application? If web page then what's the purpose of site url in my case? Can I put in site url some fake url and samply using analitics.js script?

- Can I use tracking script (analitics.js) in this case or use measurement protocol directly?

Best regards,

Marcin

Hi @Marcin L,

That is an interesting situation. It sounds like you are not a website and not a mobile app... but actually a software program, is that correct?

If you use URL based tracking but plug in a fake url, what are you actually tracking? And if you use mobile app based tracking but have no app, what are you actually tracking?

Has your developer looked into Google Developers for core reporting API solutions? It seems to me that you need something like this to ideally track data metrics.

Kind Regards,

James

Yes, it is software product. Database with management studio written as HTML5 SPA application. Each client installs own copy and can access it using web browser (via IP or using intranet address - maybe without FQDN).

We want to track 2 things:
- viewmodels being loaded by user (via pageview event - but we are only interested in view name - not entire url: ex. viewmodels/stats - so we can fake domain name but not actual path)
- features used by user (via event event - for features activated by clicking buttons on loaded page )

In reports we would like to see usage statistics only: which pages are used more often , which features on which pages are used most often.

After skimming thought Core Reporting API I understand (maybe wrongly) that it can be used only for fetching reports, but not for collecting usage data.

Hi @Marcin L,

From a online software project several years ago, we used a few products from Google Developers to create the ideal setup for Google Analytics. If I remember correctly, we used the page and event tracking from the Measurement Protocol and then Google Developers for core reporting API solutions to create the reporting and tied everything to our Google Analytics account.

We were not able to get quality data by just using Google Analytics, but Google Developers does provide a robust set of products to enhance GA.

Kind Regards,

James
