Track existing customers?

Hi,

I have a client (SaaS) service whom would like to have a separate View for non-existing customers, so we can track conversion etc. based only on visitors who are not already customers. (You only buy this product once and get login credentials, so most visits are from existing customers, lowering our conversion rate).

Can we solve this simply by setting User ID on logged-in visitors on User Scope (we know that these are existing customers because they have once logged in)? Would this track future sessions from customers and exclude them as well, even if they do not login again in the new session?

And how would we set a new view to exclude visits from users that have a user ID in their cookie? Even if they are out-logged from the service.

We are using GTM + DataLayer of course.

Thanks!

1 - Create a custom dimension, user scope, and fire it when users first log in. User scope CD is stored in a cookie, so as long as users don't delete cookies this CD will be carried across sessions.

2 - Create a filter at view level and use this CD value to filter in/out traffic.
