Total Events vs Unique Events with Form Submission

I've placed a tag on an event for a form submission on my website(s). What I'm seeing in GA is that the number of total events is far more that the number of unique events. Since an event occurs when someone hits a submit button on my site, I'd expect to see the same number of submissions as Total Events (and if this were the case, I'd expect that many of the forms would be duplicates). Instead what I'm seeing is the number of submissions is actually equal to the Unique Events. Where are all the other Events coming from that are counting towards the Total Events? Why wouldn't I be seeing lots of duplicate forms? BTW - I don't believe that so many people would be clicking the submit button more than once since it's a pretty instant submission of the form.

You might be having some form validation in place, like email / empty text box.

So button clicked might be 5 times, but only 1 successful form submit.
