Is Cross Domain Tracking required for the website having both the versions of URL i.e. HTTP & HTTPS?

Hello Friends,

I have an e-commerce website with SSL certficate and I want to implement the Google Analytics tracking code on the website. The problem that I am facing is that all the checkout, shopping cart URLs of my website are running on the HTTPS version and all the information pages like home, category or product pages etc. are running on HTTP version though the domain is same for both the versions.

So do I need to implement the cross domain tracking in this case for HTTP & HTTPS versions?

Please help.

Regards

Hi Sarmad,

The protocol (HTTP vs HTTPS) is irrelevant. As long as the cart is on the same domain (example.com) then it does not matter and you do not need cross domain tracking.

Hello Theo,

Thank you very much for the clarification on this.

There is one more problem that I am facing for this website. While setting up the property for this website in Google Analytics, which protocol standard (http or https) should I choose? As I have already told you that my website has mixed set of URLs running on both versions (http & https).

Please guide.

Hi Sarmad,

The protocol selection in the admin section under web property really doesn't do anything so it doesn't matter what you put here for now. It used to have some impact on in-page analytics but that report is not working now anyway. Smiley Happy

I'm having difficulty understanding the https and http versions of my site on Google Search Console. It started with seeing that there was a robots.txt script on our homepage - https://airweave.com/ So I've removed that. Now I want to submit a sitemap but our sitemap is http://airweave.com/etc.etc. Does that mean I can only submit a sitemap on the http version of our site? Also I just associated both the http and https version of the site to our GA. Should I have not done that? Looking on the search console they are reporting way different traffic numbers.
