GA picking up 'accounts.google.com' as referrer on Social sign in

Our GA is picking up users who log in via OAuth/ Social with Google incorrectly and tagging them with 'accounts.google.com' as the referrer.

This didn't used to happen. How can we fix this?

Hi Alistair,

You need to add accounts.google.com to the referral exclusion list. To do this go to Admin -> Property -> Tracking Info -> Referral exclusion list. This will prevent accounts.google.com from triggering a new session. Hope this helps.

Hi there,

As far as I know, if you add accounts.google.com to the referral exclusion list, you will lose the previous referral as well, and in consequence, attributing it to direct/none

Hi,

If no new session is triggered when the user logs in using Google login the original session will still have the original referrer. You will not lose the original referrer.

Hi!

If I add accounts.google.com to the referral exclusion list in GA, will accounts.google.com.mx

excluded automatically, or I should add it separately?

Hi Arnold

I am facing the same problem on my site and when i am trying to add "accounts.google.com" to the exclusion list. It's showing me this message:

These settings only work with the analytics.js version of the tracking code. If you’re using the ga.js version, configure these settings in your code. If you’re transitioning to analytics.js from ga.js, customize these settings to match your previous configuration for data continuity.

Can you please help me on how i can resolve it.

Hi @Mehul S :-)

It says that on all Properties (even newly created ones), it is a generic warning.

How old is the Property?

If it's less than a few years old then chances are the site is using analytics.js.

If by chance the site is using ga.js then the same thing would be achieved by adding the following line of

code before the send pageview (swap out www.incorrectreferersite.com) with the applicable domain name

_gaq.push(['_addIgnoredRef', 'www.incorrectreferersite.com']);

Cheers

Bronwyn
