GA not tracking events?

Since we launched our new website, it's not picking up any events.

I have one profile on my site which doesn't have any filters and no events are showing either.

Example event trigger: Download full price list button - https://www.workbooks.com/pricing

Our old site was getting 40+ event hits a day (site-wide users are around 500 per day)

The site runs on Drupal 8 with a SSL certificate.

GA not tracking events?

Hi Samuel,

It seems that on your new site you implemented Google Analytics through Google Tag Manager but you are still sending the events using the ga send command which is used with the Google Analytics tracking code. Please check the document below about tracking events with Google Tag manager:

https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/6164470?hl=en

Hope this helps, let me know if you have questions.

Wow, thanks for the rapid reply.

I had no idea implementing via Google Tag Manager would cause a head-ache.

Will take a look at the link.

To add to @Arnold M's response, below is a useful migration guide.

And another great one for post migration checking.

This can't be true, surely I don't need to set-up a new trigger on Google Tag Manager everytime someone uses an onclick to track events?

Samuel - I took a look at the source code on the website link you provided. Depending on which version of analytics tracking you are using you may have to setup event tracking differently...

Here is an example of the tracking code for Classic Analytics using ga.js:

onClick=”_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'category', ‘action', 'opt_label', opt_value, ‘opt_nonInteraction’]);"

Here is an example of the tracking code for Universal Analytics using analytics.js:

onClick=”ga(‘send’, ‘event’, ‘category’, ‘action’, ‘label’, value, {‘NonInteraction’: 1});”

Thanks I have tested this alternative at: https://www.workbooks.com/events (see testing 'GBP Test' link).

However watching this in real time analytics on a clean profile and no events are still being triggered?

Still having no luck here.

I've just followed a guide to track all internal downloads (http://www.amazeemetrics.com/en/blog/google-tag-manager-tutorial-part-2-tracking-downloads-in-gtm-ve...) but no luck so I....

Then set-up a new Trigger called Pricing page PDFS (Clicks - Just Links) > URL contains pdf. Fired on trigger > page URL contains events.

I then set-up a tag (type=Universal Analytics) with my Google Analytics ID, category = PDF, Action = {{Click URL}}, Label = {{Event}} Trigger >Firing Triggers = Pricing Page PDFS.

I then went to: https://workbooks.com/events clicked on the URL the pdf link - but still no event was triggered?

Hi Samuel,

You have used the variable URL. This however is the URL of the current page you are on.

You can make it work like this:

1. Go in GTM to variables.

2. With default variables, click on Configure.

3. There you have a list of variables related to clicks. Choose Click URL.

4. Use the Click URL contains pdf as a trigger.

I have just created a test and tested the test pdf link on your site and it works.

Can you make it work with the instructions above?

P.S. The link also contains an onclick with a ga-event, when you do the tracking through GTM, you do not need the GA-code anymore.

Thanks Jos,

Is the trigger type a custom event or click> Just Links.

I went to Triggers added new trigger type: Custom Event > Event name >PDF Download > This trigger fires on >Click URL contains pdf > Saved as name "Click URL contains PDF".

I then created a tag (Universal Analytics > Filled in my tacking ID > Added Event Tracking Paramters > Trigger = Click URL contains PDF

I then went to this page (which has no GA event code) and clicked on the Advisory Service Brochure download link - But had no luck when analysing the real-time events, what have I done wrong?

Sam

P.S. I also tried the above with the trigger type = Click - Just Links (rather than Custom Events).
