Experiment Won't Find Original Page

I'm trying to set up an experiment on Google Analytics on my Wordpress blog. When I enter the URL of the original page, the preview is dark. I have no idea if that is significant, but when I try to validate, I get that the code is not found on the original page, but is found on the variant page . This happened when I put the code in the header, which should affect the whole site. It happened when I used a plug in to add scripts to only the original page. It happens when I delete the code entirely from my site! This is driving me crazy! How do I get Google to find my original page?
