Email Tracking problem - Outlook 2013

Hi,

I have tracking code that works fine when I open the email message in Lotus Notes, gmail, outlook.com, yahoo and AOL. When I open the email (from my gmail account or my outlook.com account) in Outlook 2013, it does not show in Real-Time Events.

If I change my trust settings in Outlook 2013 from the default, so that pictures automatically download, then I get a Real-time Event. Many people use Outlook and most stay with the default settings, so I'm feeling stumped.

Has anyone figured out how to see opens in Outlook 2013?

This is the setting:

Capture.PNG

Here is my code with x's for my UA:

<img src="http://www.google-analytics.com/collect?v=1&tid=UA-xxxxxxx-17&cid=<<InterTrac UUID>>&t=event&ec=email&ea=open&el=intertrac+test+of+email+clients+11/13/2015"/>

<<InterTrac UUID>> is a merge tag.

Thank you for any help!

Cindy

I should have mentioned that I have images in the mail and they display automatically - I think because I am a safe sender - so I don't get a "Show images" message displayed that would fire a message to GA.

Actually, this is a feature in Outlook - the blocking is deliberate and designed not to be circumvented.

So this means that Google Analytics really cannot be used for email because you cannot track opens in Outlook?

Every email open-tracking system has the identical restriction. If a user does not allow images to be downloaded, then no open-tracking can occur.

Once creative way to respond to this is to have a compelling image and styled alt tag rather than a 1x1 tracking pixel - this would inspire more people to allow the images to be loaded. You can have the server make the tracking call to GA when the compelling image is requested.

The complexity and psychology of opens and tracking -- not to mention compliance with CAN-SPAM and industry best practices -- is what drives people to use third-party email marketing tools instead of rolling their own.
