Custom Dimensions: Overriding 3rd Party Script

I am working on a GA implementation via GTM.

The site uses Demandbase which sets all 20 custom dimensions in an event that fires shortly after pageview (upon API resolution).

Here's a sample from Google Tag Assistant (this is an Event):

Category: Demandbase
Action: API Resolution
Label: IP API
Title: Find Service Providers
Custom Dimension 1: Residential
Custom Dimension 2: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 3: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 4: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 5: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 6: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 7: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 8: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 9: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 10: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 11: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 12: Columbus
Custom Dimension 13: OH
Custom Dimension 14: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 15: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 16: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 17: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 18: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 19: (Non-Company Visitor)
Custom Dimension 20: (Non-Company Visitor)

I am testing this from home but the site is B2B focused so these dimensions often populate with more data (the customers they seek often have their own IP address blocks).

Anyway, I'm thinking of setting user scoped custom dimensions based on options selected on contact forms.

So, upon a user selecting an option from a drop down I'd add that (dataLayer) variable as a custom dimension `Custom Dimension 20: Acme Inc`

How can I determine the scope of the existing custom dimensions and the effects of overriding (and setting a new value) to a given custom dimension?

Hi Adam. To determine scope of your custom dimensions check property configuration in Google Analytics administration interface. Overriding hit scoped custom dimensions is ok. If you override session/user scoped custom dimension, last value is the value you will see.
