Adding UTM parameters to a social button link - would this work?[ Edited ]

Interesting question from a colleague - could we add utm tracking to the links we share, from our site, via social buttons? e.g. on the fb share button we would augment the link we send to fb with campaign parameters. I don't see any reason, theoretically, why this would not work. We'd be able to see how many people then clicked on the link, after it was shared, and came back to our site.

Facebook has it's own Google Analytics URL builder tool so there should be no problems tracking shared URLs with UTM parameters.
