inability to link my Wordpress website to Google Search Console

**First of all, I am aware that this is not the Search Console Forum. I have posted my question there to no answer. So I am trying this***

I created a website, successfully attached google tag manager through a WordPress plugin.

I confirmed the success of my tag manager installation through Chrome's Tag manager plugin. It even shows that I successfully attached Google Analytics to Tag manager.. As you can see by the attached screenshot

But Search Console gives me the following message:

Verification failed for http://digitalhmarketing.com/ using the Google Tag Manager method (less than a minute ago). We could not find any Google Tag Manager container ID on the index page of your site.
Verify your ownership of http://digitalhmarketing.com/. Learn more.

Why won't it verify my website?

Any help would be awesome!!

Thanks!!

Hi,

Your GTM container code appears in the footer and search console is looking for it in the head tag, or after the opening body tag, I'd suggest to try the "codeless injection" option in the GTM plugin settings and try to verify again. Let me know if it worked.

Unfortunately, it didn't work. Console still won't verify.

Now, Tag Manager Assistant won't even recognize the tag manager tag.

Yes, I see, it seems that the codeless injection option doesn't work with your theme.

The next thing you can try is chose the "custom" option and manually add the code to the template after the opening body tag.

<?php if ( function_exists( 'gtm4wp_the_gtm_tag' ) ) { gtm4wp_the_gtm_tag(); } ?>

Let me know how you get on.

I have a question about that. I keep hearing about the opening body tag bu cannot find where that is. I have looked for it in my functions.php file to no avail. Any advice on where it is located?

Thanks!!

Please try to find <body> in your header.php file. Place the code after it.

Ok, so the weirdest thing just happened.

I chose the "Custom(needs tweak in your template)"

I did not go near my template. Did not change ANY code.

Yet that did the trick!
