Same property+tracking id for HTTP and HTTPS pages

At present, we use the same GA tracking code and property for both the HTTPS and HTTP versions of the website. The HTTP pages have the HTTPS pages as canonical. Will there be any loss in user traffic information? What is the recommended practice for sites existing on both HTTP and HTTPS protocols.

Hi,

In addition to the canonical tag you need to 301 redirect the http version to the https version to ensure that users and other search engines are accessing your site through the https version. Hope this helps.

Hi Arnold,

I was wondering about the Analytics piece. The HTTPS pages uses the same tracking code and property id from HTTP site (the HTTP site has been up longer), is that fine?

Hi,

You can use the same tracking code on both the http and the https versions, that' is fine.

No problem.

Just make sure that you're using the Universal Analytics snippet.
