SSL Switch (http to https) and GA Default URL Property Settings

In July I switched my site to SSL/https (http to https), but I forgot to change my Default URL in my GA Property settings (http://screencast.com/t/TfrtaFGYE).

Is it necessary to change the Default URL setting in GA Property Settings after switching a site from http to https? If I don't change that setting will my data be affected?

My initial thought is no because the tracking code is the same, but I came here for feedback/advice from experts.

Thoughts?

Hey Bryan, how are things?

Although I haven't had any problems tracking Views without HTTPS when the site is in fact HTTPS, as part of best practices you should change to HTTPS.

On the article below we have the following:
https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1042508?hl=en

"See how to correctly format your domain name.
Select the protocol standard (http:// or https://).[...]"

My suggestion is to create a new view, including the HTTPS and let that one you're using as it is, so you can compare and see if there's any change.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the response, Leandro.

So, if I didn't change my default URL after the http to https switch, are you saying that the organic traffic data shouldn't have been affected?

I would like some further insight on this.

Thanks!

Hey Bryan,

I've faced the same problem in the past and I didn't get any change on my data once so ever, but I do not know on the technical side if there's anything implied, or if anything can cause data loss. Creating a separated view tracking the HTTPS it's what I did to help me keep track if anything was alright.

For me, data shouldn't be affected because the domain is still the same, but I could be wrong.

Let's see if anyone have anything to add on this.
