Data transference between www and non-ww versions?

Until recently we had a non-www & non https:// version of our site. I have been uninvolved until now, by which point the URL is displaying as https://www.example.com.

Somehow, though I could find no GA or Tag Manager snippet, there appears to be sporadic organic & referral spam data showing until early this month. I am not sure how this is possible, but regardless, this was for the older non-www/https:// version.

I asked in here a few days ago and received guidance on how to switch the version that was being tracked in GA, by updating it in Property & View Settings. My question is, can this data for the older version also be said to apply to the newer version as well, which existed at the time (just not in GA). I.e. In terms of the data it shows, how does GA handle small differences in URL protocol like this, and why is it worth making the change in GA?

Zachary,

GA is protocol agnostic.   Any changes you made only affect in page reports and content flyouts (the little icon next to the pages in content reports).

Hope that helps.

Best,
