Using Value Track - Need to measure and track clicked keywords for my Ad's

I need to measure my ad's in a way thats mentioned here -

Please refer this page where I was looking for some ways to accomplish it

http://support.google.com/adwords/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2375447

Now I wish to understand how do I do this for keywords -

My problem: For keywords say - dental software - a user clicks on this and comes form an Ad in my Ad Group 1 which is being displayed. Now I wish to track this particular user who comes by clicking my ad using keywords " dental software" and I need to store and view this url and results in GA how can i do this in.

Where do I setup this custom URL and how do I track the same in GA. Since I want to also store these informations in my backend after a user signs up successfully.

So Is this above possible?

Please kindly suggest

Hi

I do this for many of my lead gen campaigns with SugarCRM by passing hidden fields in the form.

1. I read the valuetrack parameters with javascript and then push them with lead form in Sugar CRM

2. Here is sample code for this URL

http://www.example.com/?matchtype={matchtype}&keyword={keyword} this is value track URL in adwords an will show up as  http://www.example.com/?matchtype=b&keyword=blue%20socks on landing page.
var first = getUrlVars()["keyword"];
var second = getUrlVars()["matchtype"];

alert(first);
alert(second);

function getUrlVars() {
    var vars = {};
    var parts = window.location.href.replace(/[?&]+([^=&]+)=([^&]*)/gi, function(m,key,value) {
        vars[key] = value;
    });
    return vars;
}

Hope this helps

Hello, tokumaraditya!

First, you need to change Destination URL of your Ad. After that you need to wait for somebody to click on your Ad.

Now you are able to see the results in GA!

To do so this just follow this path:

Traffic sources >> Search >> Paid >> Primary Dimension: keyword

You'll see all those keywords from Value Track parameter {keyword}

Now you need to type "dental software" in search bar to find it. That's all!  Smiley Happy

If you want to see different parameters, just change Primary Dimension

To see URLs with all parameters set Primary Dimension: Landing page  (you can choose it in Other >> Taffic Sources)

Good luck!

Why not use auto-tagging? Does it not work for the site?

The URL builder makes it very quick and easy to create manually tagged ads, and it's designed specifically to work for google analytics. You can't get as much data with manual tagging as you can with auto tagging, but it's better than nothing. Smiley Happy

Hi @tokumaraditya

Take a look at this amazing post from Justin Cutroni:

http://cutroni.com/blog/2009/03/18/updated-integrating-google-analytics-with-a-crm/

In a similar fashion, you should be able to pass the valutrack parameters into the URL, which you can then parse back to the user if you know how to do the coding (I don't).

However, should you figure it out, I'd love to hear what you've done Smiley Happy

As the other posters have mentioned, if you enable autotagging, and integrate Google Adwords with Google Analytics, you will get all of the data you need.

Hi tokumaraditya

1. As suggested by tomhalejr you can use autotagging and do quantitative analysis in Google analytics

2. Mostly value track is used when you want to store keyword / placement info for each lead / registration in a 3rd party software like CRM and you still want click data in Google analytics

Is that what you are trying to achieve?

Hi Thanks for the responses.

yes auto tagging is put to on and I can see keywords there. So you mean then I dont need to do this manual addition or use Value Track right?

One concern I had - I wish to store these keywords individual user wise- say a user x comes to our site via keywords" dental software" now he comes and signs up for our trial account. We see that this new person has signed up and wish to store the url with the keywords he typed to find our ad and then became a lead for us.

Can we store that keyword or url and then see that individual users who are completing this goal for us.

Please advice.

Thanks

Alright so you mean -

My campaigns dentination URL should be - http://www.example.com/?matchtype={matchtype}&keyword={keyword}

Where once activated and live when someone clicks on the ad's they will see this in the url bar? and via the JS you mentioned below I can caputure and push them to the forms they submit while signup, We do that via php and html forms.

So you are able to successfully store these keywords against a leads signup you mean?

Thanks

Yes exactly. I do it for almost all of my clients.

I normally use keyword and matchtype parameters as i mostly run search campaigns for lead gen but if you run placement campaigns u can use those also in the url

all list of parameters is listed here
