User Deleting Remarketing Cookie

Hi

I wish to know how the remarketing list in AdWords finds the number of people currently in the list. What happens when a user on a list deletes his/her remarketing cookie. Is that change reflected in the number of people in a list?

How does AdWords know which user has deleted the cookie or is it that once a user is put on a list then their cookie ID stays there till it expires.

Thanks for your help!

Akshat

Hi Akshat,

Thanks for posting this question to the forum. Its a tricky one to new good information on.

Users are added to a remarketing list within seconds after visiting a page with the remarketing code. It is "real time" serving.

Every time users visit a page containing this tag, their timestamp gets updated so that they remain on the list for the amount of time specified in the membership duration of the list.

In summary:

  • Single remarketing lists are updated in real time in the back-end
  • Custom remarketing combinations are updated and refreshed every few minutes in the back-end
  • The user count in the AdWords interface is updated every 24hr & rounded to the 2 most significant numbers. Example above.

Exact Size Rounded Number in the UI

1,567,993 ->> 1,500,000
348,897 --> 340,000
23,561 --> 23,000
4,328 --> 4,300
678 --> 670
423 --> 420
28 --> 28

In summary, the list is not updated as the user vists different GDN website, but rather every 24 hours. (It is not known what time during the day)

Hi Akshat,

Cookies are added to remarketing lists in real time and 'Number of users' column is updated daily.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for you reply. But my question was around the process and frequency with which AdWords finds the number of users who still have the remarketing cookie on their browser. If it does check this cookie status everyday then how does it do so.

Thanks for the info info Smiley Wink. I have read this article.

The description given is not as detailed or explanatory as I would like. It doesn't quite answer my query about method of checking the numbers in the remarketing list everyday.

Hi,

The system don't check the number of cookies every day.

When some one visits a web page with remarketing tag, their cookie id ( This number uniquely identifies a web browser on a specific computer, not a person.) is added to the remarketing list.

After visition a page with remarketing tag, a visitor remains in the remarketing list until he/she

1. Removes the cookie in the browser.

2. or the Remarketing list membership duration time expires (Default membership duration is 30 days)

New members are added in to the list with new visits on the page, with new cookie IDs, old members are removed when Google don't find the cookie in the machine or membership duration expires.

The total number of members in a remarketing list is updated every day.

Hope this make sense.

And my question is when does Google check whether the cookie exists. Is it when the user is viewing any webpage on the GDN that is eligible to show a remarketing ad related to the deleted cookie or any other specific site?
