Autotagging Manual Tagging Conflicts?

Hey everyone,

I read conflicting answers about this online. Our company is using manual utm tagging to integrate analytics into a bunch of tools (mixpanel, kissmetrics...etc) but we also want to take advantage of the Adwords' autotagging feature to enrich and simplify our analytics report.

We read that using both can cause data discrepancies. Can anyone explain this further? So for instance if I have this url:

http://example.com/?utm_campaign=camp1&utm_medium=medium1&utm_source=source1&gclid=kjshdf897sdf983hj...

Will this mess up my analytics? If so is there anyway to use both manual and autotagging to take advantage of both?

P.S: I read that you can use both together by enabling this setting in Google Analytics " Allow manual tagging (UTM values) to override auto-tagging (GCLID values)". I don't understand this setting. If I'm allowing UTM tags to override auto-tagging, then what's the use of autotagging or why enable it in the first place?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Youssef,
GCLID also is used for non GA purposes, e.g offline conversion tracking. (https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2998031?hl=en). In this case you would want GCLID to be present in the URL by auto tagging but you want to use your own tags in UTM params then you would have to use Autotagging but over ride it by enabling "Allow manual tagging (UTM values) to override auto-tagging (GCLID values)"
By default auto- tagging values over ride manual tagging if you dont select this option.

Hello Youssef,

The "allow manual tagging to override auto-tagging" no longer exists as an account setting. You can either checkbox to auto-tag urls or not. Checking the "auto tag urls" box only adds the missing utm parameters missing from any manual tagging you are doing to the url in your ads settings. This means they will not override manual tagging, but supplement by filling in the missing parameters.

Let me know if this helps!

Nick

Hey Nick,

Thank you for the answer. In other words, Analytics will give priority to manual tags, and if it doesn't find a manual tag it uses the value from autotagging, am I correct?

On a separate note, do you know what values autotagging fills utm_source,utm_campaign and utm_medium with? (assuming no manual tags are used and only autotagging is used exclusively).

Hello Youssef,

If you are asking in terms of adwords it adds the source as google, the medium as cpc, and the campaign as the name of the campaign where the ad click is housed (i.e. which campaign the ad group is in in which the ad is).

Best,

Nick

I think manual tagging overrides auto tag. But let double check that. I'm pinging our programming specialist on that;

Things may have changed. It has been my experience that using both manual tagging with utm_ parameters and auto-tagging will cause the data to report in 2 places, causing a kind of double-reporting. It's been a little while since I've confirmed this behavior.

Thanks for the response!

Is there any way we can confirm what happens if we have both on without
enabling the "allow manual tags to override autotagging" option (without
having to try it out)?

Thanks a lot.
