Q: To start off, give us some background about yourself and how you got started with PPC - specifically AdWords.

A: I’ve been managing AdWords Campaigns for 8 years and am currently a Vice President/Director of Paid Search at DigitasLBi (my office is in Chicago). 8 years ago my management team at my company at the time came to me and asked if I’d be able to help manage a new Paid Search department we were starting.  At the time I had no idea how to manage Campaigns or what AdWords was. I took the time to start practicing building Campaigns and learning all about the AdWords platform.

Q: Tell us about your best AdWords experience? Funniest?

A: My best AdWords experience is when I helped a friend who was starting his own business set up an AdWords Campaign.  He was very skeptical at first and didn’t think that it was the right thing for his business, but the results ended up exceeding his expectations and it became the biggest driver of new business for him.

Funniest is when I was starting out and I didn’t know how Match Types worked and I spent 8+ hours doing keyword misspelling variations on just a few Keywords. I wasted so much time and when I found out and understood that Broad Match would cover these misspellings I was embarrassed of the time I wasted.

[CM JP: Brian, I think that's happened to everyone who has ever created an AdWords account!]

Q:  What do you enjoy most about the Community?

A: Two things - I enjoy being able to help advertisers solve their AdWords challenges, and I enjoy the opportunity to keep my skills and knowledge sharp. There are often answers that I’m not totally sure and I have to do my own research to make sure that I’m giving the correct answers.

Q. As a TC Alumni, what changes have you noticed in the Community from when you started out as new member to now?

A: The biggest change is the platform itself.  Back several years when the Community migrated to a new platform it was a big change that was extremely different and it took me a long time to get used to it. Overall I think the updated platform was for the better, and allowed for a more social community, with enhanced features for connecting advertisers with people who want to help.  The old platform had a feature where you could search for keywords right from your reply and paste the search results in your reply - I miss that feature.

Q: Where would you like to see the Adwords Community go in the future?

A: I’m very happy with where the Community is - if I had one place where I’d like to see it go I guess I’d say is for the Community to become more interactive using Hangouts and such. Sometimes it’s easier to talk through questions and answers live vs trying to go back and forth via writing replies.

Q: Let’s do a hypothetical question: Say the Google AdWords design team approached you asking you what is the one feature you would like to add to AdWords. What would it be?

A: I’d like to be able to do Ad Scheduling at the Ad Group level.  I’ve come across many instances where I want specific Ad Copy to be live at only certain times of the day, and other Copy to be live at other times. While I can achieve this by setting up separate Campaigns, it’d be nice to have the ability to Schedule at the Ad Group level.

Q: Lastly to end our interview on a Googley note, tell us something cool about you?

A: I have been to 4 SuperBowls; my favorite was SuperBowl 42 when the Giants defeated the heavily favored Patriots.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT SURPRISE GUEST  - Nisal

“...What i understood is Google AdWords can be used for any kind of business, from Multibillion businesses to SMEs.”

-Read below to find out more interesting facts about our surprise guest.

Q: To start off, give us some background about yourself and how you got started with PPC - specifically AdWords.

A: Well i was working on many different fields during the last five years of my life. I started AdWords only last December, when I started my current job as a Digital Media Specialist. My normal job role is working out strategies for Digital campaigns using Social Media and related fields. However my boss decided to go on AdWords suddenly. So he put me in for AdWords- PPC related issues and here I am after 3 months Smiley Happy

Q: Tell us about your best AdWords experience? Funniest?

A: Well It hasn’t been so long since I joined this industry, so my client experience is not that broad. But during this short time what i understood is Google AdWords can be used for any kind of business, from Multibillion businesses to SMEs. And the best part is you can control everything you need and you can measure the results from AdWords, which would be the best options for SME to plan their digital marketing strategy.

Q:  What do you enjoy most about the Community?

A: I love how supportive the Community members are! I came to the Community by accident while i was searching for something related to AdWords, and somehow I posted my 1st question here and I got instant answers for my question. I was genuinely surprised at that moment.

But being active in this Community for sometime made me realize that almost all the active members/staff are very welcoming and supportive. I have to mention the last AdWords Trivia Game 2014: Round 2. It’s the best day I’ve ever had during my short acquaintance with the Community.

Q: Where would you like to see the AdWords Community go in the future?

A:  I know so many people have already mentioned this before, even in the spotlight but I think if Google can create some regular meetings related to AdWords it would be much fun. I don’t think this should be hosted by Google. If there can be a setup where they can form a local community in different countries related to AdWords it would be great!

[CM JP: Since this has been voiced recently by more than one member of the Community, I’ve brought it to the attention of the AdWords Community team. Stay tuned for more details!]

Q: Let’s do a hypothetical question: Say the Google AdWords design team approached you asking you what is the one feature you would like to add to AdWords. What would it be?

A:  I would like if there is a more flexible option on bid adjustments. For example, at the moment there is no direct way to change bid adjustments on tablets, or exclude computers and tablets and focus only on mobile devices. But there are many business models that can be highly benefited by using mobile, and so many people are already looking for this option. So if Google can add/change this, it would be good.

Q: Lastly to end our interview on a Googley note, tell us something cool about you?

A: Um. For the last two years I was a Journalist for a local newspaper, and believe me, being a Journalist in Sri Lanka gave me a very unique set of experiences that I can’t expect from any other field!

Nisal,

Your welcome! Btw as a former Canon shooter, I noticed the distinctive "L" lens. Is that the 70-200mm L f/2.8? When I was shooting with a 5D that was my favorite lens. 8)
