I have received a one-star review with no comments which I view as being unprofessional and potentially intended to damage my new business.

It seems odd to me that there is no Google Policy that states a review must be of a reasonable length (eg TripAdvisor do have this) as this is actually encouraging trolls and malicious reviews that are designed to lower the review score. It would make sense for Google to seek to raise the value of their grading system by introducing such a policy

As it is, I either need to boost my ratings through 'friend and family' ratings, combined with genuine feedback from clients, or consider removing my company's listing from Google, which is something I wish to avoid if possible.

Any advice or views would be much appreciated

Cheers

Jon Huckle

Hi @Jon H

The review system is one of Google My Business biggest let downs.

Unless we can prove that the user is fake ( highly unlikely ) then they will not remove it.

So essentially you can create an account and review your own business with 5 stars or someone else with a 1 star.

Its pretty sad state of affairs:

Sometimes you are able to prove reviews as fake and remove ( but few and far between )

Tim,

Many thanks for your reply - this seems to be my own conclusion of the situation as well.  It is deeply disappointing to be let down by a) an unprofessional review and b) by the poor standard of the review system.

It seems as if I have two choices - either remove my business from Google or to try and up the overall rating by creating false accounts (almost to prove a point)!

I think this is very poor from Google Business as it engenders a bad feeling of trust - I was thinking of using Google Mail to host my company email accounts but will not now, and will think twice before using other Google paid for services.

Thanks for your time though

Jon

Well, the other approach you can take (in lieu of creating false accounts and using family), is to simply provide a great experience to your customer base and seek more reviews.

Anecdotally, I don't think people put much decision power on a company that only has one review, and that review has no comment.  People generally choose companies that have a lot of reviews, and of recent, a lot of positive reviews.

Good luck!

Only once you have 5 reviews are they visibly displayed. So build into your customer journey or email marketing, review requests from happy customers.

Is there any way to reply to the review?  Many other sites do.
