My Website is Being Omitted from Certain Search Results, Why?

When I search for the keywords associated with my business my website only shows up in the "Omitted" results.  Yet if I enter almost any other word on the end then I rank very high.  For example when I search for "Portrait Photographer Reading Berkshire" I am omitted from the results and only available in the Omitted pages.  Yet, if I add the word Austin on the end or MACH or a bunch of other words I rank high, usually on the first page.  I would have thought that if there was something wrong with my website that has put it into the Omitted category that it would be there for all of these searches.  What has happened that it only shows up in the Omitted pages for these specific keywords?

@Mach P

I'n not happy you started a new thread ignoring or omitting the fact having started previously a very similar thread "Re: Verified, But Not Showing up in Google Under Category and Location"

Not really sure I care whether you are happy or not. If you actively helping fix the problem I would have cared, but you are not are you. This is a separate issue from the previous thread and therefore warrants a new thread. Just because threads aren't organized the way you want is not a good reason for me to stop searching for a solution. Martin Leitch MACH machphotography.com

I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding what you mean by "omitted". You rank 9th organically for "Portrait Photographer Reading Berkshire" and 10th locally (if you click for more results below the map). So you aren't being omitted, you just don't rank in the top 3.

In addition to the tips Colan gave you on the other thread, I'd say another few things that are probably hindering your ranking are:

1. Your site's loading speed needs improvement: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.machphotography.com%2F (your site took a long time to load for me)
2. Your homepage has no content on it.
3. Your title tags need work (ex: http://www.machphotography.com/portrait-photography is MACH Portrait Photography | MACH Portrait Photography which is just the same thing repeated twice and doesn't mention the city you're in).
4. Your competitors have the category "photography studio". Not sure if that category applies to you, but if so, you might want to add it.

"I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding what you mean by "omitted". You rank 9th organically for "Portrait Photographer Reading Berkshire" and 10th locally (if you click for more results below the map). So you aren't being omitted, you just don't rank in the top 3."
Now that is useful and relevant information. Thank you Joy. When I say Omitted I'm talking about this message that shows at the end of the usual search results, "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 224 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."
I do see the placement in local results as you mentioned but in the organic results, nope. No such luck. 22 pages and no mention. It would seem that you are doing something that I am not, perhaps you can shed some light on how you got there? In this instance I used Firefox in "Private" mode using Google.co.uk to search for the string "Portrait Photographer Reading Berkshire". Are you doing something else?

"In addition to the tips Colan gave you on the other thread, I'd say another few things that are probably hindering your ranking are:"

"1. Your site's loading speed needs improvement: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.machphotography.com%2F (your site took a long time to load for me)"
I am working on this but I am having to work that indirectly. Could this be a reason to omit me from search results?

"2. Your homepage has no content on it."
I hear you, but I'm a photographer so my home page has photographs on it. This is how most of my competitors also have their home page so I believe that would not be a big factor in ranking well against them. Especially as the text and links that are there are very specifically worded.

"3. Your title tags need work (ex: http://www.machphotography.com/portrait-photography is MACH Portrait Photography | MACH Portrait Photography which is just the same thing repeated twice and doesn't mention the city you're in)."
This is something else I have to work through a third party. So are you saying this could be a reason to omit me from search results?

"4. Your competitors have the category "photography studio". Not sure if that category applies to you, but if so, you might want to add it."
Okay, thank you. Could this be a reason to omit me from search results?

Although useful I still don't see anything that would put me in the Omit category. If you have could explain what you did that shows me in 9th place organically then that might help.

Thanks for your response Joy.

I'm not able to replicate that your site is filtered. I've attached a screenshot of where you show up in the local results and here is the link: https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#num=100&q=Portrait%20Photographer%20Reading%20Berkshire&rflfq=1...

The organic ranking I was seeing is in Google.com. So you do show up in the US but not in the UK. I would guess it might have something to do with your country settings in Search Console that you might want to look into. But it looks like your site is missing a lot of the factors that are needed to rank well. See https://moz.com/search-ranking-factors for a more complete list. Content may not be on your competitor's sites but I've never been able to get a site ranked without content.

You can also optimize photos as a photographer. Yours don't appear to be optimized.

This is how Google views your site - http://www.browseo.net/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.machphotography.com%2F . All they really can tell about your homepage is your user agreement which tells them nothing about who you are, what you do, or where you're located.

Just Jumping in here.

Omitted results, are duplicate results or near duplicate pages that Google does not display

In other words they offer such little value, that Google is not displaying them.

You have a lot of work ahead of you, I could not even get the site to load

Good valuable info. This was not showing as the UK and I've updated it.

"But it looks like your site is missing a lot of the factors that are needed to rank well. See https://moz.com/search-ranking-factors for a more complete list."
But nothing that would omit me, right? This may be fixed by the country settings update on the Search Console. Something to work on longer term. Thanks.

"Content may not be on your competitor's sites but I've never been able to get a site ranked without content."
I didn't say I don't have content. It's just not on the home page. I have significantly more good content on my site than most any of my competitors.

"You can also optimize photos as a photographer. Yours don't appear to be optimized."
Do you have an example? I've done some work on this but apparently not enough.

"This is how Google views your site - http://www.browseo.net/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.machphotography.com%2F . All they really can tell about your homepage is your user agreement which tells them nothing about who you are, what you do, or where you're located."
Using the link you sent I count 7 mentions of portrait photography/portrait photographer and 3 mentions of the town and county. But definitely I can do more to fill this out.

Thanks again. This is all good valuable insight. Your help on this has really made you stand out among your colleagues.

Tim,
I appreciate you jumping in. I think Zenfolio is having some issues today. I am also experiencing the same performance issue. I'm going to check with them and submit your quote "I could not even get the site to load" and see how they respond .

On the other topic of omitted results. I did read somewhere that omitted results are usually duplicates but then would that not mean the same thing for any search string? If, for example I add RG1 to the end of my usual search string "Portrait Photographer Reading Berkshire" then I come up just fine. Also I have no problem appearing in the Local results. Why are they not impacted in the same way?

Again thanks for your help. Anything at all productive is appreciated.
