2 locations - different hours and days of operation

Hi everyone,

I am helping some friends with their Google local pages.  They have 2 different locations.  Each location has it's own hours and days of operation.

They are:

Holy Grill 10th ave (open M to F, 730am to 4pm and Sat, 10am to 4pm)

Holy Grill 5th ave (open M to F, 730am to 3pm)

They do a very busy brunch business at the HG 10th ave location on Saturdays.  If I Google Holy Grill now, the 5th ave location seems to be the priority.  It's causing a bit of confusion with customers who immediately see "CLOSED" on Saturday and decide to go elsewhere for brunch.

Can anyone help identify what we have done incorrectly so that we can get it sorted out?

Here is the information as requested above:

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Looks like Google's confused about this being a multi-location brand. What it should be doing, is displaying a map with an A and a B for the two locations, similar to how the 3-pack map shows up with a 1,2,3 for normal searches. There's a few things I see potentially causing the confusion.

First, your 5th ave location isn't named correctly. It should be just "Holy Grill". Looking at Google's guidelines

Your name must not include Location information, such as neighborhood, city, or street name, unless it is part of the real-world representation of the business. Your name must not include street address or direction information.

  • Not acceptable: "Starbucks Downtown", "Macy’s Union Square", "Holiday Inn (I-93 at Exit 2)", "U.S. Bank ATM - 7th & Pike - Parking Garage Lobby near Elevator"
  • Acceptable: "Starbucks", "Macy’s", "Holiday Inn Salem", "U.S. Bank ATM", "University of California Berkeley"

I noticed it was changed to Holy Grill - 5th Ave in June though, so that was probably an attempt of yours to fix the current issue. You should change it back though. If that was you or the client by the way, never make a change by suggesting an edit. You should always make changes in the dashboard from google.com/business.

What I'd do instead to try and fix the problem, try adding schema to your website and let Google know you've got two location, and all the information over those locations. I haven't seen a good 'best practices' for adding two locations into one schema block, so I'd just generate the two schema blocks, one for each business, and add both to the site. Another option you could try is making separate pages for the two locations on your website. If you at least made a page for the 5th location (you can make the map connect to the GMB listing to help Google connect the dots by the way) that would almost certainly get the 10th ave location in there instead of the 5th at least, if not kick things into a branded map list with both location.

If it was me and the client was in a hurry to fix what's going on, I'd leave the 10th ave location pointing to the home page, and point the 5th ave location towards a 5th ave page on the site. Add the schema to the site too (10th on the home page, 5th on the 5th page) and see if that shakes things loose.

Someone else might see something I missed, but that at least gives you something to try.

Was my response helpful? If yes, please mark it as the ‘Best Answer.’ Learn how here.

Hi Chris,

I agree with James, I would create location pages (in fact, I would create a location page for each location). Instead of linking from each listing to the homepage, I recommend linking to the corresponding location page. In addition, I recommend linking back from the location page to the corresponding listing. I would also link to any other social profiles from that page (for example, Facebook - typically users create a Facebook listing for each location as well). If you haven't invested any time in creating local citations for each location, I recommend doing so because Google gathers information about a business across the we). And then as James recommended, I would add structured data (JSON-LD is Google's recommended format. They recommend placing the markup in a script tag in the head section of the html). Good location pages include details specific to that location, for example, opening hours, full address, contact details etc. Adding a description is recommended - perhaps you could display a description that includes mention of the brunch for the 10th avenue location - a way to send Google another signal.

For the homepage, I recommend marking up the details for both locations, see example below. When adding markup, Google recommends creating a global identifier for your business (typically users markup their homepage URL as the ID but for businesses with multiple locations, typically the URL of the location page is used). If you don't create location pages, I recommend creating IDs and including them in the markup. The id doesn't have to be a working link so you could use something like http://www.holygrill.ca/10th-avenue/ and http://www.holygrill.ca/5th-avenue/ (I've used these in the example but if you create location pages I recommend replacing them with the location page URLs).
